SEO – Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines. – source: Wikipedia

 What is SEO?

SEO is roughly divided in 6 areas:

  • Technical SEO
  • Marketing
  • Content
  • Link Building
  • Social Media
  • Web Analytics

 Technical SEO

With this I mean all technical stuff like site structure, htaccess files, 301 redirects, search engine friendly URLs, etc…

Claim Your Niche. What is your USP (unique selling Point). What matching keywords and keyphrases do you wish to rank high on in the Google Search Results pages (SERP).

Content should be relevant, trendy, interesting and unique. Keywords that are important to your site, should be mixed in with your content.

Link Building

The more strong inbound links, the better for your site ranking.Google still relies greatly on good quality inbound links when assessing your PageRank, which in turn has a lot to do with your ranking in their SERP.

Social Media

No longer a mystery for many. Use it, and use it wisely. You got to be on the social channels Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and your content ofcourse must be easy to share. So implement those buttons. Maybe more Social Media is relevant to your Niche. If so use it. From experience I know thirteen-year-olds are wiser with Social Media than with e-mail, phone or TV. Don’t forget that’s your future customer.

Web Analytics

Analyzing your visitor data is important. You want to know how many visited, where they came from and what they did on your site. Important is a consistent way of analyzing your data with the help of any of the analytical tools available. Google Analytics is Free and a great one to use.

Best Practices for SEO

Such a highly diverse field of operation calls for Best Practices. A lot is said for common sense of course, but Google also has it’s ideas and rules. You can read about these webmaster guidelines here.
Further more use your head, do not tramp on someone else and don’t do thing you wouldn’t tell your granny about on a sunday morning over a cup of nice steamy tea;)

My Blog will  publish all kinds of seo things, best practices, common mistakes, new trends and so on. I will use this blog to ventilate my opnion or to share things I think are important to the field of SEO. I hope you enjoy it and are able to pick up some good things.
Maybe by doing this, I can make SEO a bit more transparant for the masses and help DIY’s in the field.

Best of Luck,

And if you get the urge to hire an SEO, don’t hesitate to cont(r)act me 😉
